Brief introduction of thermal conductive materials on Automotive application from Sinoguide Tech

Once you start driving, heat generated from the motor would be used for heating up the battery. But it takes a while to work because the motor doesn’t produce much heat. As a result, it might take several minutes before the battery is warm enough to provide full acceleration.

Normally, the battery temperature should stay on the normal range. If too high for the battery temperature, it would bring the malfunction for the automotive.

And,that’s why Telsa would choose the high performance thermal conductive materials for dealing with their heat issues on battery pack. From below pictures,you could find out.

Tesla has used 7000 pieces standard 18650 battery cells inside the battery pack, and made them lighter, cheaper and easier to manufacture. Tesla has removed the security mechanisms of the individual battery cells of the battery pack.
Here you can see the bare 18650 laptop cells. They are interwoven with an aluminum channel (golden color) that carries coolant to each cell. It appears like a good 25% of each cell is in contact with this. (via way of a thermal conductive pad and kapton electrical insulator)

Very large buss bar interconnecting the modules made of thin laminated strips of copper, that way it’s still flexible.

This is the top of a module, each cell is connected to it’s buss via a tiny single wire, which helps distribute current and acts like a fuse in the event of a cell fault.

Batteries would be enclosed in a battery box with 6mm thick steel walls to protect them from damage.

Of the thermal conductive pad application, it has also been used on Land Rover, Audi, BYD etc World-famous brand automotive.
